Opportunity Information: Apply for 20181205 RZ

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Collaborative Research Grants program funds teams of two or more scholars who want to carry out substantial, sustained humanities research together, with the idea that debate, shared problem-solving, and multiple perspectives can produce stronger scholarship than solo work. The program is designed for projects that bring diverse approaches to a topic, incorporate more than one point of view, and open up new lines of inquiry that lead to concrete scholarly outputs. NEH supports both projects rooted in a single humanities field and interdisciplinary collaborations, including work that connects to the social sciences or natural sciences, as long as the project remains clearly grounded in humanities questions and uses humanistic methods and interpretation.

A key requirement is that proposals commit to tangible, sustainable outcomes that communicate interpretive humanities research. Examples include co-authored or multi-authored books, born-digital publications, themed issues of peer-reviewed journals, and open-access digital resources. Regardless of format, the expectation is that the work will be shared beyond the project team, with dissemination to scholarly audiences, general audiences, or both. Collaboration can happen within one institution or across multiple institutions, and NEH explicitly welcomes cross-institution partnerships such as research universities working with teaching-focused colleges, libraries, museums, or independent research organizations. Teams can include international participation, with up to half of the collaborators based outside the United States.

The grant can support full-time or part-time project activity during the award period, specifically to enable the collaboration and research needed to reach publication or comparable outcomes. Allowable costs may include salary replacement for collaborators, payments for consultants and research assistants, fringe benefits, and travel-related expenses such as lodging and per diem. Indirect costs may also be included. NEH notes that it rarely funds the entire cost of a project, so applicants are encouraged to bring in additional funding or cost sharing, although matching is not strictly required.

The program offers three award types tailored to different stages and kinds of collaborative work. Type 1 Convening Grants provide up to $50,000 for a one-year period and are typically used for conferences or working group meetings that refine a research topic, test ideas, and plan a later publication. Type 2 Publication Grants provide up to $250,000 for one to three years (with a cap of $100,000 per year) to support projects that are ready to move toward completion and publication in print or digital form; however, funds cannot be used for publisher-paid costs or publication subventions. A Type 1 award can help teams prepare for a later Type 2 application, but it is not required. Type 3 Archaeology Grants also provide up to $250,000 for one to three years (again, no more than $100,000 per year) for archaeology projects that result in publication, and excavation is not a requirement.

Eligible applicants include a wide range of entities and individuals: state, county, and local governments; special district governments; public and private institutions of higher education; federally recognized Native American tribal governments; nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status; and individual applicants. The opportunity is a discretionary grant under CFDA 45.161. The listed funding opportunity number is 20181205-RZ, with an award ceiling of $250,000 and an original closing date of December 5, 2018.
